Some Things that are Not Photographs

At this site you can quickly build a full fingerboard scale in any key and any mode - Major, harmonic or melodic minor, Mixolydian, Roumanian minor, Lydian minor, Prometheus? Pelog?? If you've ever wanted to explore the modes heres the tool. You can also use it for quick reference to the scales in many non-standard tunings. There are also full fingerboard charts of any chord you can imagine, again available for many non-standard tunings. Finally, if you need this for a tuning not already represented, you can enter your own custom tunings! I've used it to make a few quick banjo scales for a friend by setting the top four strings to a banjo tuning and ignoring the rest. It should work for any instrument with six or fewer courses.

The Rose is a replica of an 18th century British frigate that spent a good deal of time patrolling the coast of the rebellious colonies during the American Revolution. The replica, the largest wooden vessel in active service is currently owned by 20th Century Fox and it's future is somewhat in doubt, so take a look while you can.

Don't worry, Yankees, The Confederate Air Force is not going to give General Lee close air support in his push through Pennsylvania -- I think. They are an organization that preserves, flies and displays airplanes of the WWII era.

http://www.enoriver.org
Is a conservation group dedicated to preserving the natural historical and cultural resources of the Eno River basin. They are best known for the annual Festival For The Eno, now in its 24th year. The 3 day festival features over 100 performers on 5 stages plus almost as many craftspeople. There are activities for the children, food and the Mighty Eno River, the Orinoco of the Piedmont. It all happens on and around July fourth and has been going on every year since 1980.

WCPE is my local classical music station here in piedmont North Carolina. But it can also be your local classical station almost anywhere in the world. Besides the transmitter at 89.7 FM here, they have another at in the North Carolina Sandhills and a number of stations in several states re-broadcast WCPE programming. CPE is on cable systems from Maine to Nevada, on C band satellite covering the Caribbean to Hawaii and on the internet (in every streaming format I know of) covering the planet. If classical is your music WCPE can be your station. They also carry the Metropolitan Opera live every Saturday afternoon (EST) during the season, and play recorded operas on Thursday evenings all year. I listen in my car as I travel to and from my photo shoots. The pictures in the series "Drive Time" were taken from a moving car with the radio tuned to CPE.

Some People who are Not Photographers

http://carrboro.com/clyde/clydejones.html
It is not possible to visit the little village of Bynum without noticing how many of the inhabitants are critters - Clyde Jones Critters, to be exact. A fair number of them have migrated up to Chapel Hill too, and I've had a passing acquaintance with some of them for 20 years now. They are well worth meeting.

Ted Porter and his group of mad digeridooists are back in business after a couple years of doing other things, most of which still seemed to involve digeridoos. Ted was the mandolin player of the Nee Ningy Band and co-authored "Don't Want to Die in Durham", the nearly almost kinda official anthem of the Sunnyside jam musicians. You are not going to hear music like this on your radio - at least not on this planet.

Dragonfly Fiber Arts is Pat Crott's site of wearable art. Pat has been doing Sashiko, a Japanese fine detail sewing technique, for several years and has begun experimenting with new methods and styles lately, including a complex layering technique called "slashed silk" Describing her designs is almost impossible. You really have to see them.

James MaloneBeach creates medals, ribbons campaign pins and wall hangings, but this is not your father's war memorabilia. You have to see "The Royal Order of Chiquita Knight's Grand Cross" in Gallery 1 but there are many fascinating pieces in all the galleries.

http://www.georgepratt.com/
George Pratt doesn't really belong in this 'People that are not Photographers' section as he actually is a photographer. But he is also a film maker, painter, illustrator, lithographer, writer (I Know I'm forgetting some of his talents) and his site consists entirely of his graphic work. He combines his skills too and his latest graphic novel "Batman: Harvest Breed" was recently published by DC Comics.
